As James Fallows has pointed out (among many others -- here's a sample Google search) -- It's Burma, not Myanmar. Just like it's Cambodia, not Kampuchea (and for very similar reasons, if you care about human rights).

I'll go read the Fallows article, but in general I think that countries should be called whatever the government in power -- no matter how odious they are -- wants them to be called.

I dunno. I got a lot of sympathy for anybody clinging to "Russia", "Belarus", "The Ukraine", or "Georgia" instead of "Soviet Union".

Those aren't terribly good examples, given the Soviet Union no longer exists.

Al Jumahiriyah al Arabiyah al Libiyah ash Shabiyah al Ishtirakiyah al Uzma, Republica Bolivariana de Venezuela, Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Nippon-koku, and Zhonghua Renmin Gongheguo are better examples.
